Echt und nicht aufgesetzt: Warum wir Babynahrung neu denken müssen

Authentic and Unforced: Why We Need to Rethink Baby Food

What was the moment when it became clear to each of you: I want to join Löwenzahn Organics and lead the company?

David: I have been supporting Löwenzahn in other roles since 2020. Back then, the quality and transparency of the products blew me away, and I haven't stopped being enthusiastic about them since. When I met Eva and we hit it off immediately, I knew: We can definitely tackle this challenge together!

Eva: Two conversations were particularly influential for me:

  1. When I spoke with our product developer Antonia for the first time. I could feel how much knowledge and passion went into the product and the brand. Her scientific approach fascinated me and also opened my eyes to the fact that we are truly unique on the German market with the whole milk variant—especially with such a basic food product. On top of that, I simply thought Antonia was great.
  2. The conversation with my friend Natalia, who always has to give me the go-ahead for the important decisions in my life. Together, we realized that Löwenzahn provides the perfect foundation for implementing my ideas and visions from recent years. Baby—and toddler—nutrition radically reimagined on a scientific basis—what a brilliant goal. By then, it was clear to me that I was in.

Was there an experience that particularly shaped your attitude towards baby food?

David: Our son had to go straight to intensive care after an emergency cesarean section, and my wife was at the other end of the hospital. The pediatric nurses on the ward took great care of us and enabled us to breastfeed, but in this medical exception, my son and I had to rely on alternatives, which fortunately we had.

Eva: My mom definitely had a major influence on me here. We always had a local and seasonal organic food box, and as small children, we were given what our parents/older siblings ate, pureed or in small soft pieces. We really ate everything, from asparagus and chard to beetroot risotto. All three of us were also breastfed for a long time. My credo: the more natural, the better. However, my mom was also 100% at home. I work full-time. My mission: to make healthy and natural nutrition for babies and children possible also against the backdrop of modern society and a realistic distribution of care work.

Which values are non-negotiable for you at Löwenzahn Organics – even if times get tougher financially?

David: Our ambition at Löwenzahn Organics is to develop our products based on sound scientific evidence and to maintain the quality standards we promise our customers, even in economically challenging times. We want to stick to these principles and communicate our decisions transparently.

Eva: Well, anything that is not in the interest of baby health. But that can also mean that we have to take “intermediate steps” to reach our goal, to gradually educate and bring parents along with us. It doesn’t help baby health if we have the healthiest product, but no one buys it.

Many parents worry about ingredients and quality: How do you ensure that your products truly live up to that trust?

David: Since the brand’s inception, Löwenzahn Organics has been defined by the principle that quality and safety must never be compromised. In addition to the partner laboratories at our production facilities, we also work with Galab Laboratories in Hamburg, an independent laboratory that tests our batches again using even stricter procedures. We share these analyses on our website, as transparency is an essential part of ensuring safety.

Eva: This is an enormous responsibility that we take very seriously. We go virtually every extra mile we can to provide the highest possible level of safety. This includes very carefully selecting our raw materials, conducting double analytical testing, and working with highly established, professional partners and laboratories. However, standards in Germany and limit values in the EU are generally extremely high, which also contributes to the excellent international reputation of the German baby products category.

How transparent does Löwenzahn Organics want to be, and how transparent can it be – and where do you draw the line?

David: We are always as transparent as we can be. Sometimes there are partners in the supply chain who do not wish to be named, but we always find a way to map out traceability for our customers as well as possible. In the near future, all our batches will be traceable back to the raw material's country of origin on our website.

Eva: Education and transparency are our forte - and we want to expand on this even more in the future. What's the deal with Pre-, 6+, 10+ and children's milk? What are the differences? Why are DHA and ARA important, and what even are they? Algae oil or fish oil, and what about palm oil. Is coconut oil really better? Can I also just feed my child cow's milk?

Transparency also means breaking taboos for us: not sugarcoating anything - saying it like it is: Who actually came up with this milk shortage? How mentally stressful is the phase of wanting a child? How am I doing in my relationship right now? Balancing parenthood with my own wishes and needs. And, and and. We are creating an environment that truly comprehensively supports and assists parents.

When it comes to our infant formula, we often cannot freely communicate the benefits of certain ingredients due to the WHO Codex. This sometimes leads to inadequate education for parents - and that annoys me.

Advertising ban: Yes! I am also for breastfeeding, and parents should not be persuaded to use infant formula. But at the moment when I am actively dealing with infant formula, and I am dependent on it, I do not think it is in the interest of the babies' health that limits are placed on transparency here.

Was there any critical feedback from female customers that led to an internal change at your company?

David: Of course, both our customers and the midwives in our Expert Club regularly provide us with feedback that we incorporate into our daily work. This can be a suggestion that we should communicate more about our testing procedures, but it can also be product-related. For example, many people wanted a way to scrape the spoon against our milk powder, which was incorporated into the development of the cans for our whole milk powder and is now excellently solved.

Eva: Our customers want to be able to buy even more baby food products from Löwenzahn - working on it.

Where do you consciously make decisions against the market trend because they feel right to you?

David: We started in one of the most heavily regulated categories in one of the toughest markets in the world, namely baby food in Germany. So, swimming against the trend is practically part of our DNA. We are very deliberately targeting areas recommended by experts that are too niche and too new for larger, partly publicly listed corporations. For example, despite the growth potential, we will leave the already well-stocked shelves of highly sugary snacks for children to others.

Eva: Despite the strong market trend, we will not offer highly processed (e.g., glass jars), sugary products for children—fruit sugar is sugar too.

What honestly sets Löwenzahn Organics apart from other organic baby brands in your opinion?

David: The combination of organic quality and an uncompromising commitment to the latest scientific findings is a defining feature of our brand and something our customers value about us. Fortunately, we are constantly innovating and improving our formulations with every new study or discovery.

Eva: Scientifically backed, better products.

How often do you rethink or improve products—and why?

David: Always. We are very proud of our product portfolio, but both in the organic raw materials sector and in milk research in general, new topics and insights emerge so frequently that we don't want to rest on our laurels. We also don't communicate some changes because they are too small and too specific to be understood. Other topics, such as the elimination of tropical oils in our whole milk powder, are easier to understand and better suited for communication.

Eva: Always. We never stop keeping ourselves up to date with the latest science. Organic raw materials in particular can be difficult to obtain in some parts of the world. For example, we are constantly screening the market so that we can strike when new suppliers pop up.

If you could give a new mother or father a single piece of advice: What would it be?

David: My best friend, who was already three years ahead of me in terms of fatherhood, said to me at the beginning of the pregnancy: “Stay friends,” and I think that’s very good advice. It gets incredibly stressful and you hardly have any time together as a couple, but if you support each other with friendship and warmth amidst the chaos, you can handle anything.

Eva: If possible, take time (during parental leave?) to go on adventures with the children and fully enjoy the moment and the time together. During our parental leave, we spent a year traveling around Southern Europe and Turkey in a camper with our children, Juli and Finn. These are memories and feelings for which I am endlessly grateful.

What do you wish parents would say about Löwenzahn Organics when they recommend you to others?

David: That we supported them with products and communication during one of the most sensitive phases of life. Then we did everything right!

Eva: That the mental load regarding the children's nutrition has been so much reduced. And that they simply feel incredibly well supported with all their worries and concerns.

Conclusion: Why we need to rethink baby food

The conversation with Eva and David makes one thing clear: Löwenzahn Organics is more than just a brand for organic baby food. It is an attempt to combine the high standards of science with the unvarnished reality of modern family life. Whether it is David, who emphasizes the systemically important responsibility behind every batch, or Eva, who wants to bring healthy nutrition out of the "organic niche" into the stressful full-time everyday life.  In the end, it is about giving parents not just a product, but the good feeling of having one less worry during one of the most sensitive phases of their lives.

Would you like to know what distinguishes our Original, Whole Milk, and Goat Milk baby food?

In addition to its best-selling organic follow-on milk, Löwenzahn Organics has two other product lines. Because every baby is unique, we also offer organic follow-on milk made from whole cow's milk and whole goat's milk to better meet different needs. All our products contain important nutrients for babies' development, but differ in their milk base, fatty acid composition, and digestibility. While our Original follow-on milk is based on skimmed cow's milk, the whole milk and goat's milk variants use less processed milk powder, completely free from palm oil, and are particularly mild.
