When palm oil in baby formula makes sense and when it doesn't
One question we regularly receive is about the palm oil in our Stiftung Warentest award-winning baby formula. Palm oil is often associated with pollution and contaminants. We have deliberately chosen certified organic and RSPO palm oil for the pre- and follow-on formula made from skimmed milk powder on a cow's milk base – we'll explain why in the post below.
Good to know: We also have baby formula without palm oil in our range.
As close to nature as possible
Palmitic acid is not only found in high concentrations in breast milk, but also in palm oil. The concentration of these important oils is even higher in palm oil than in other vegetable oils. To achieve an optimal fatty acid composition similar to that of breast milk, we therefore use palm oil for palmitic acid in combination with other vegetable oils (sunflower oil and rapeseed oil). This only applies to our baby milk made from skimmed milk powder.
Our baby milk without palm oil
Whole milk powder contains significantly more palmitic acid than skimmed milk. That is why our whole milk formula (based on cow’s and goat’s milk) is free from palm oil.
For all our milk formulas: Strict and independent quality controls
We are committed to high quality and safety standards. It is no coincidence that we are a premium brand for baby food.
What can be problematic about palm oil? During the processing or refining of palm oil, potentially carcinogenic 3-MCPD fatty acids and glycidyl esters may be formed. This is, of course, not an option for us. That is why we have every single batch of our milk formula tested by both the production facility and an independent laboratory for 3-MCPD and glycidyl esters, among other things. This allows us to reduce the contamination of harmful substances to a minimum. This is not only evident in our laboratory tests, but is also confirmed by our 2022 test winner result for our Pre milk made from skimmed milk powder.
If any, then exclusively certified palm oil
The palm oil we use is not only organic but also RSPO-certified. This organization was founded by the WWF to establish and promote minimum environmental, economic, and social standards for oil palm cultivation. The palm oil used in our products comes, for example, from plantations in West Africa and South America.

"RSPO members have so far committed to the following principles and criteria: - No clearing of primary forests and ecologically valuable forest areas for plantations, - Protection of endangered animal and plant species on the plantation, - Protection of water, soil and air (which means, among other things: no burning of forests), - Compliance with legal regulations, including land use and property rights, - No child labour, but educational opportunities for children living on the plantation, - Inclusion and support of smallholders, as well as monitoring of plantations by independent, authorised auditors." Avoiding palm oil in baby formula made from skimmed milk powder is not the solution
A WWF study examined the environmental effects of Germany completely boycotting and replacing palm oil. The result: replacing it with coconut, soybean, sunflower, and rapeseed oils would require significantly more land. Greenhouse gas emissions and the threat to animal and plant species would also increase.
Conclusion
We fully agree that the excessive use of palm oil in foods such as sweets, as well as in cosmetics or as a fuel additive, is unnecessary. However, when it comes to baby food made from skimmed milk powder, palm oil is a very good solution as a source of palmitic acid. Our goal is to produce baby food with the best nutrients for your baby.
If you prefer a milk formula without palm oil, we recommend baby milk made from whole milk powder. Here you can learn more about our whole milk baby milk based on cow's milk, and here more about our whole milk baby milk based on goat milk.
