Into the bowl: Bone broth for your baby

Enhancing savory baby food such as soups or vegetable purées with bone broth – or how you can support and protect your baby's gut health. The Löwenzahn Organics family has grown once again: Organic Bone Broth in beef and chicken varieties.

With our organic baby food, we want to meet the needs of babies and parents based on insights from nutritional science. That is exactly why we have spent a lot of time and energy researching and speaking with experts in the field of complementary feeding and bone broth. After a long development process, we have created an organic bone broth with no added salt, tailored to babies' needs. By the way: Our Organic Bone Broth is also suitable for the whole family.

How it all began

One evening, after a long day at work, Alice, co-founder of Löwenzahn Organics, sat at the kitchen table of her Berlin apartment and typed the words “promote gut health” into her laptop. At some point, she came across bone broth and remembered her childhood, when bone broth was often made.

Just a quick note: bone broth is rich in nutrients and delicious. However, making it is rather a time-consuming and smelly affair. A long, slow cooking time is important, though, so that the valuable nutrients can be extracted from the bones. They can have a positive effect on gut health, as well as on sleep quality. (More on this below).

As a mom or dad, you already have your hands full, and now you’re supposed to spend hours cooking bones too?

Alice and Liz (former managing directors of Löwenzahn Organics) wondered why such a fantastic product as bone broth for babies during their first 1,000 days—and thus for moms and dads—wasn’t available to buy in stores.

“It is a lengthy but at the same time beautiful process to bring a new product to market for the needs of babies and parents.”

What benefits does bone broth have for a baby's development?

During the complementary feeding phase, the digestive system and the baby's entire little body adapt to the initially new “solid” food: whether it is vegetable purée, soups, or pasta. Intestinal health, the immune system, as well as connective tissue and joints are all still developing. The nutrients in bone broth can be beneficial for babies during the complementary feeding phase.

Support and promote intestinal health

Gut health is a key focus of our organic baby food. This is because the gut has a major impact on babies' physical and cognitive development. Its functions include digestion as well as immune defense.

That is why bone broth is good for babies' guts:

  • The proteins, amino acids, and minerals in bone broth support and promote gut health.

  • Bone broth is easy to digest, can be broken down completely without effort, and has a soothing effect on the digestive tract. Glycine helps by stimulating the production of stomach and bile acids, making digestion even easier.

  • The amino acid glycine can do much more. It protects the gut with its anti-inflammatory properties.

  • Collagen and glycine have a protective and supportive effect on immune defense.

Promote the development of connective tissue and joints

Not only the bowel is still developing, but also the connective tissue and joints. The structural protein collagen is an essential component of several types of connective tissue and thus serves to build ligaments, bones, cartilage, teeth, and skin. Collagen also ensures the stability, elasticity, and firmness of tissues and organs.

What ingredients are in bone broth?

Bone broth contains many nutrients. It contains collagen, glycine, and also minerals, which are important for gut health, the immune system, connective tissue, and joints. Importantly, our organic bone broth for babies contains no added salt.

Why collagen in baby food?

You are certainly familiar with collagen. In many beauty products such as creams, serums, or sprays, collagen is added as an ingredient to promote skin firmness. But why is collagen also beneficial in food, and especially in baby food? First: What exactly is collagen?

Collagen is a protein found in the bodies of humans and animals. A full 30% of the protein in the body belongs to the collagen group. Proteins are essential building blocks for healthy growth and hormone production, and they also serve as an energy source.

Collagen is found primarily in bones. To extract the collagen protein, the bones must be simmered gently for an extended period. This releases not only collagen but also other valuable nutrients, such as glycine and minerals.

Why glycine in baby food?

Glycine is an amino acid that is also a component of collagen and thus an essential building block for the human body. Interestingly, glycine is also responsible for the production of collagen within the body. Although our bodies can produce glycine themselves, they can only produce a limited amount per day (semi-essential amino acid). This is why it makes sense to provide the body with additional glycine through our diet.

How is bone broth used?

Our organic bone broth comes in a jar. You can easily use it to enhance hearty porridge dishes or soups, as well as dishes such as pasta with tomato sauce. Of course, you can also use bone broth as a base for a stew. To do this, take the desired amount from the jar with a spoon and add it to the dish of your choice while it is still heating on the stove. This is because the bone broth must be heated during preparation. It is not worth being too stingy with the contents of the jars. You should have used it all up within 3 days.

What is the difference between bone broth for babies and bone broth for adults?

Bone broth is not all the same. It depends on which animal the bones come from, how the broth is cooked, and whether ingredients are added. The handling of contaminants also differs for food for adults compared to food for babies.

Salt is often added to bone broth for adults to make it more flavorful. However, the addition of salt is completely unnecessary for babies.

In addition, baby food is subject to particularly strict product safety regulations.

Our Bone Broth jars are autoclaved at the end of production—meaning that all microorganisms, spores, and similar substances are killed using pressure and heat to ensure the highest possible product safety. Furthermore, the bones used are regularly tested for inhibitors and antibiotics. Every batch is also tested for pesticides, heavy metals, and other contaminants, as with all our baby products.

Why do we offer non-vegan baby food?

At Löwenzahn Organics, as a company, we have a clear focus on development during the first 1,000 days. We are committed to organic baby food based on nutritional science. The animal products we use in our baby food come from organic, species-appropriate farming that meets the requirements of the organic seal.

We are not a purely vegetarian or purely vegan company. We respect and value every dietary decision based on scientific or ethical grounds.

Moms and dads are the experts when it comes to their babies.

All in one place

Bone broth contains a variety of nutrients, above all collagen and glycine, which can support digestion, gut health, the immune system, connective tissue, and joints. This is why our organic bone broth is tailored to the needs of babies, but is also ideal for toddlers and mothers who are breastfeeding or in the postpartum period.
