Result: Löwenzahn Organics First Infant (Pre) Milk is the test winner at Stiftung Warentest 2022.
Of course we know about our excellent quality. Our organic products are developed, produced and tested by experts in the field of infant nutrition. Because quality and safety are inextricably linked for us, we even have our baby formula tested twice: once by the production facility and then again by a food laboratory in Hamburg that is independent of the production company. Stiftung Warentest tested our original organic first infant (pre) milk and named it the best of the 21 pre-foods tested. But who is behind Stiftung Warentest and the baby formula test?
Who is Stiftung Warentest?
Stiftung Warentest is by far the best-known non-profit consumer organisation in Germany. Their tests are planned and carried out by in-house foundation employees. The tests are carried out according to thoroughly developed test plans. Test samples are purchased anonymously from retailers. In addition, external independent laboratories are commissioned by the foundation. The results of the investigation are then published by the foundation itself.
Which baby formulas were tested?
Infant formulas based on cow's skimmed milk powder were tested and only first infant (pre) milks were included in the test. Powdered first infant (pre) and HA first infant milks for mixing as well as ready-to-drink initial milk were examined. Why only “Good” and not “Very good”? We will go into more detail about the test results below. First of all: Nobody was rated “Very good”. We are test winners, the only ones with a grade of 2.0 and have left well-known brands such as Aptamil, Beba, Bebivita and Hipp behind us. Fortunately, a total of 14 of 21 pre-foods were rated “Good”, i.e. according to our 2.0 with a 2.2 to a 2.5.
What criteria were used to test the infant formulas?
In the baby formula test, the nutrient composition (nutritional physiological quality), the pollutant content, the microbiological quality, the packaging and declaration of the respective infant formulas were checked.
What about the nutrient composition of our Organic First Infant Milk makes it the test winner?
Our first infant milk formula received the best rating for its nutritional composition, among other things.
The recipe for our organic baby formula is based on current scientific studies on infant nutrition. We only add ingredients that can increase the well-being of babies, we leave out everything else:
- With organic certified ingredients
- Only lactose as carbohydrate source
- With the omega-3 fatty acid DHA (legally required for infant formula) from algae oil
- Without fish oil
- Without genetic modified organisms
We cannot talk about other ingredients of first infant (pre) milks that make the nutritional composition outstanding. Maybe you have already heard about the very important WHO code for baby milk and its application in Germany. After this, manufacturers are not allowed to advertise pre-nutrition. Because breast milk is undisputedly the best food for babies.
Further evaluation factors of the baby formula test
Other factors that were included in the evaluation were packaging, declaration and microbiological quality.
In terms of microbiological quality, it can be summarised that all first infant milks performed flawlessly in the test. There were differences again with regard to the packaging and declaration, i.e. the information about the product printed on the package. We received a grade of 1.6 for declaration and a grade of 1.8 for packaging. We want to make our packaging even better soon with completely recyclable packaging components.
All infant formulas in the test met the limit values for harmful substances, even though Stiftung Warentest has used stricter test procedures since the last test 6 years ago. Even with very careful production, harmful substances cannot be completely avoided. Some of them occur in the environment or arise during the production of food.
The first infant formulas were tested for three contaminants: chlorate/perchlorate, 3-MCPD/glycidyl ester and mineral oil residues (MOSH/MOAH). We only received a downgrade for MOSH. This meant that we did not receive a “Very Good” rating, but rather a “Good”. You can find out more about our approach to quality and safety in our quality manual .
Conclusion on our rating as test winner
Stiftung Warentest tested 21 starter foods from larger companies such as Aptamil, Hipp and Co as well as more modern organic brands. With its organic first infant (pre) milk, Löwenzahn Organics has scored as the best "pre" food, especially in terms of its nutritional composition and in organic quality. We are very pleased with the test results. However, we want to get better and not rest on our laurels.
