Baby formula tested: Quality and safety of Löwenzahn Organics Organic Baby Milk confirmed

The production of nutritious and safe organic baby food is at the heart of our daily work at Löwenzahn Organics. As mothers, we also personally care about the quality and safety of baby food. In 2021, we were tested twice by independent testing organizations under different conditions: by the consumer magazine ÖKO-TEST and by the Swiss television consumer magazine Kassensturz.

Result: Löwenzahn Organics Organic Pre-Nourishing Milk is among the best organic pre-nourishing milk products.

Note: In August 2022, our Bio Pre starter milk (made from skimmed milk powder) was named the test winner by Stiftung Warentest and was also reviewed by ÖKO-TEST in 2019.

Löwenzahn Organics baby food is completely suitable for safely feeding your baby. We ensure this through testing of the production facility and by an external, and therefore independent, laboratory commissioned by us.

Which baby formula was tested by ÖKO-TEST in 2021?

The consumer magazine ÖKO-TEST tested a total of 16 pre-formula products, including our Löwenzahn Organics Bio Pre initial milk made from cow's skimmed milk powder.

The Swiss television show Kassensturz also examined baby milk products. A total of 10 of the best-selling milk formulas in Switzerland were tested. Among them was our Löwenzahn Organics Bio Pre initial milk made from cow's skimmed milk powder.

ÖKO-TEST result for Löwenzahn Organics Bio Pre initial milk

  • Löwenzahn Organics Organic Pre Starter Milk is one of the two best organic pre starter milk varieties

  • From a nutritional science perspective and from an environmental protection perspective, palm oil is suitable as palmitic acid for baby milk on a cow's skim milk base

  • We, as a manufacturer of baby milk, may not speak about the third point. Because this concerns the nutrient composition. According to the WHO Code, as it is applied in Germany, this is classified as unauthorized advertising for pre-formula. In this regard, we support the statement: Breast milk is undeniably the best food for babies.

Palm oil as a source of palmitic acid in milk formula is environmentally acceptable

In ÖKO-TEST 2021, baby formula containing palm oil is not penalized, as palm oil is not viewed negatively from an ecological perspective. The cultivation of other oil crops is not automatically more sustainable. Furthermore, palm oil in infant formula has no harmful health effects.

When producing organic milk formula, we always want to achieve the best nutrient composition for your baby while also demonstrating responsibility towards our environment.

Human breast milk contains palmitic acid (a fatty acid) in an amount that is not found in skimmed milk powder (milk powder from which all fats have been removed) made from cow's milk. That is why we use BIO- and RSPO-certified palm oil as a source of palmitic acid in combination with other plant-based edible oils to achieve an optimal fatty acid composition.

New: We now offer milk formula made from whole milk powder without palm oil in our range.

What does ÖKO-TEST criticize?

So far, so good – ÖKO-TEST tested four contaminants in its assessment of pre-formula made from skimmed cow's milk powder: fat contaminants, microbial contamination, chlorate/perchlorate and mineral oil residues.

We do not exceed the currently applicable maximum limits for any of the contaminants. Based on the data published by the EFSA, all our values fall within the range of toxicological safety.

MOSH value rated as high by ÖKO-TEST

Our independent laboratory was unable to verify the values determined by ÖKO-TEST.

According to ÖKO-TEST's assessment methodology, we received two points deducted for the elevated MOSH level in our organic pre-formula and therefore received the grade "satisfactory".

MOSH are saturated mineral oil hydrocarbons and belong to the category of mineral oil residues. In the production of food, these cannot be avoided without exception. Unfortunately, they are present everywhere in the environment.

Potentially, they can enter food during the processing process, for example through the use of lubricants, but also through the packaging material. MOSH then accumulate in the body in organs such as the liver as well as in the fatty tissue. What consequences this can have in the long term is not yet conclusively clarified.

Currently, at the European and national levels, no limit values have been legally established. In addition, there is currently no reference method for the analysis of mineral oil. The measurement uncertainty of mineral oil analysis should also be taken into account. Furthermore, the MOSH values fluctuate depending on the batch from which the sample is taken as a basis for an assessment.

Our independent laboratory was unable to verify the values determined by ÖKO-TEST.

Nevertheless, we are constantly working to further reduce the MOSH content in our baby food.

Caution with the amount of protein in Pre food

We are also mentioned in ÖKO-TEST under the heading of protein – or rather, protein content. Protein is very important in baby milk. However, as with so many things in life, the key is the amount.

An expert on baby food, cited by ÖKO-TEST, recommends a limit of two grams of protein per 100 kilocalories for baby food. This is because too much protein is likely to increase the risk of later obesity.

Our protein content is 2.08 grams per 100 kilocalories. This value falls exactly within the range specified by the European regulation on infant and follow-on formula, which sets a range of 1.8 to 2.5 grams of protein per 100 kilocalories.

Kassensturz review of Löwenzahn Organics Bio Pre starter milk

  • Löwenzahn Organics Bio Pre infant formula is one of the best organic baby milk powders

  • In our infant formula, the statutory EU limit values for contaminants are clearly not exceeded

  • The fat contaminant glycidol is undetectable

We were particularly pleased with the "good" rating from Kassensturz.

ÖKO-TEST Result ÖKO-TEST Result

In fact, we are one of the ten best-selling baby milk brands in Switzerland. Thanks to our quality and safety standards, we have been able to compete with brands that have been established for over 50 years.

Kassensturz is a popular consumer magazine in Switzerland that critically examines popular products. In the test, selected infant formulas were checked for two fat contaminants: 3-MCPD and glycidol.

It is particularly important to comply with EU limits for fat contaminants. Our baby milk is well below the EU limits. We completely avoid the fat contaminant glycidol, so it is not detectable.

WHO note: Breastfeeding is the best nutrition for your baby. The composition of breast milk always provides your baby with the ideal combination of nutrients and good protection against allergies and diseases. The WHO therefore recommends exclusive breastfeeding for 6 months and continuing to breastfeed after that in combination with age-appropriate and balanced complementary foods. Consult healthcare professionals (e.g., pediatrician, mother/father counseling service, midwife, lactation consultant) if your child needs additional food or if you cannot (sufficiently) breastfeed. The use of infant formula may affect breastfeeding success.

Conclusion

We are pleased that the quality and safety of our milk formula have once again been confirmed. Löwenzahn Organics Bio Pre First Milk is one of the best organic pre-milk formulas.

The levels of contaminants in our pre-formula are also all significantly below the currently applicable European maximum limits. Löwenzahn Organics baby food is completely suitable for the safe nutrition of your baby.
