Introducing complementary food: when does it start?

Something new is happening all the time, the first smile, the first grasp or the first look at your food. By then you will probably be wondering when you can give your baby something solid to eat for the first time. When is the right time to start complementary feeding? What types of supplementary food are there?

A little tip: Pre-cook the vegetable puree and freeze it in ice cube trays.

First foods plan

From the 5th month

• Vegetable puree

• Cereal porridge without milk and gluten (e.g. pure oats)

Tip: Start with one vegetable and add new vegetables every 1-2 weeks. This way you know what your baby tolerates well.

2 weeks later

• Vegetable-potato puree

• Cereal porridge with whole milk or vegetable drink, max. 200 ml milk per day

From the 6th month

• Vegetable mash (with fish or meat)

• Fruit and cereal mash

• Milk or cereal mash with whole milk or vegetable drink, max 200 ml per day

Tip: Some babies struggle with digestion during the introduction of complementary feeding. Mix some pear puree with the vegetable porridge to stimulate digestio

From the 7th month

• Puree/mash with small pieces

Tip: Keep the pieces very small at the beginning and watch your baby to see if it copes well with them. Anything that is too big will be spat out.

From the 8th month

Bone broth for hearty porridge meals, soups or pasta

Bone broth (without added salt!) can support and promote the intestinal health of babies

From the 10th month

• Eating like mummy and daddy

If your baby has already had his first experience of solid meals and has got on well with them, you can now start to let them eat normally at the table.
